Te Whare Atua Ō IO - IO's Sacred House

Te Whare Atua Ō IO is the living embodiment of the Kōhatu Living Practice — a unified field of mauri grounded into Papatūānuku through the intentional placement of 25+ sacred kōhatu from across the world. It is not a constructed building, but a living system, formed through whakapapa, connection, and alignment between whenua, moana, and rangi. Each kōhatu carries its own origin, yet together they establish a single interconnected presence that reflects the unity of all things within Te Ao Mārama.

The kōhatu within Te Whare Atua Ō IO come from Tibet and Africa as ancient continental anchors; from Vaeāra‘i and Taputapuātea, Mata'irea as central Polynesian pillars; from Rapanui, Hawai‘i, and Maui as the outer navigational boundaries of Te Moana Nui a Kiwa; from Turi as the ancestral waka line; and from Ahurei, Wharerua, and Maro Te Tini as sacred marae and ceremonial spaces. From Aotea Roa, the kōhatu include Hikurangi, Whakaari / White Island, Paepae Ō Aotea, Te Awa Ō Te Atua, Mōtiti Nui a Tia, Taumaihiorongo, Matarehia, Te Whare Tapu Ō Ngāpuhi, Te Kāhui Maunga, Aoraki / Mount Cook, Mount Taranaki, and Taupiri Mountain.

These are further bound through Te Riu a Māui (Zealandia), Tāhūhūnuiōrangi (the constellations), Ngā Maunga o Kuki Airani, Halemaʻumaʻu o Pele, Te Kōhanga (Castle Hill), and Maunga Pōhatu of Taupō Nui a Tia, which carries all mountains, oceans, and rivers within it. As these kōhatu are placed into the whenua, they form a living grid — a network of mauri that restores and anchors the relationships between all realms. Each kōhatu holds its own identity while simultaneously connecting to every other, creating a structure that is both individual and collective. This process is called Te Whatupungapunga. Whatu or kōhatu that are all linked by an interconnecting punga or web. This grid becomes the foundation, the pou, and the tāhūhū of Te Whare Atua Ō IO, establishing a presence that exists across both the physical and spiritual dimensions.

Through this, Te Whare Atua Ō IO stands as a connected living system — where everything is bound through whakapapa, and nothing exists in isolation. It is the alignment of earth, ocean, and sky, held together through the mauri of the kōhatu. Once established, it continues as a living presence within the whenua, carrying forward the relationships it holds and maintaining the unity it represents.
